Underground swamp rockers The Merry Jaynz expands its body of work with a new single, “A Pretty Good Run,” that’ll be released June 30th, 2020 on all streaming platforms. The track is taken from the group’s upcoming album Flying Fall that’ll greet the world later this year. “A Pretty Good Run” is a laid-back stoner funk jam with a sky-high groove and a whole lot of tasty guitar and bass work from TMJ’s resident multi-instrumentalist/visionary/guru Tom Smith. Smith is well-known in the indie scene and has raised roofs and blown minds in New York City, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Las Vegas, Memphis, Asheville, and the Bay Area.
“A Pretty Good Run” is a social commentary cut that blends the funky side of the Dead with the darkly sarcastic wit of Frank Zappa. The musical components of it are warm and inviting and make it easy to get hypnotized by the beat the first time you spin it. Closer listening, however, reveals Smith’s true message. “The words deal with how the U.S. has been gutted like a fish,” he elaborates, “It uses the imagery of a murder having been perpetrated against Lady Liberty and hints at the likey suspect in not-so-subtle terms. The song was written because the words resonate with my opinions about current events. We're releasing it because we think a lot of people share those feelings and opinions.”
Subtle yet potent, “A Pretty Good Run” is definitely worth a listen for any Left-leaning, long-haired, freaky people looking for some chilled-out funk with lyrics of substance. Smith and the rest of The Merry Jaynz are one of the coolest crews operating below the mainstream industry radar right now and use that freedom from corporate expectations to fully express their grooves and views. This is righteous indie music that fits 2020 like a latex glove. Be sure to add it into your summer playlist rotation.
